Reflections

Born at the Right Time.

In 2020 I started learning to code. Late start. Slow progress. Some things took me weeks that probably take someone else an afternoon. I say that not to be hard on myself. I say it because the contrast makes what's happening now feel remarkable.

Six years in, the learning never stopped. It can't. What was new a month ago is outdated now. Half of what I picked up back then I don't even use anymore — good to have, not needed. And plenty of what's out there turned out to be noise. Some of it plain wrong. It cost me hours to work out which parts I never needed at all. That's the daily job now: learning, and unlearning, and telling the two apart.

A few weeks ago someone got into my email. A bad day. A full day of fixing things I didn't know were broken, and a question I couldn't stop asking afterward. That question became a prototype. That prototype is now live.

Twenty years ago, the same idea would have stayed in my head. Building it would have needed a team, fifteen people minimum, skills I didn't have and couldn't buy. The idea would have knocked around for a while and eventually gone quiet.

Instead I built it. Alone. In the gaps between two jobs and everything else.

I think about that. I don't want to get used to it. The ability to take something that's only in my head and turn it into something that runs in a browser, that stores data, that a person can actually use, this is not normal. It just looks normal because it's here and available now.

I'm glad I'm building things at this moment. Not twenty years ago when I would have needed a team. Not thirty years ago when I would have needed a company. Now. When one person with an idea and enough stubbornness can put something real into the world.

ZeroWic is the same. I knew I had something to say. I didn't know how to say it or where to put it. Now there's a space that reads right, looks right, and keeps getting closer to what I had in my head. Still not done. Never will be.

But it's real. And I'm glad it is.
